A Barrie man has been charged after police responded to reports of a suspicious person slumped over in a vehicle at a plaza in Orillia Tuesday evening.

The driver now faces charges under the Criminal Code and Controlled Drugs and Substance Charges, Orillia OPP said in a news release.

Police say on March 18 just after 6:30 pm, officers were dispatched to a plaza on West Street North.

Upon arriving, they found the vehicle on and running with a lone male in the driver's seat.

After speaking with the driver, officers arrested him on suspicion of being impaired by drugs.

Police say the accused was transported back to the Orillia OPP Detachment for further testing by a drug recognition expert.

Police say it was also determined the man was out on a release order from a different jurisdiction on previous impaired charges.

Tysen Brandsma, 37, of Barrie has been charged with operation while impaired, two counts of failure to comply with a release order and possession of a Schedule I Substance - opioid.

Brandsma was held for a bail hearing on Wednesday. His driver's licence has been suspended for 90 days, and his vehicle impounded for seven days, police said.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
