Orillia OPP seize loaded gun, drugs during takedown on Peter Street

Three people charged following incident Wednesday near Coldwater and Peter streets; two OPP vehicles were damaged in the incident

Three people have been charged after a police takedown Wednesday in Orillia that, at first, appeared to be a multi-vehicle crash in front of St. Paul's United Church on Peter Street.

In November, police began investigating someone for allegedly trafficking drugs in the city. They “were able to observe consistent drug trafficking with this individual,” Orillia OPP said in a news release.

On Wednesday, police conducted a takedown of a vehicle near Coldwater and Peter streets, and a collision occurred. Two OPP vehicles sustained minor damage.

Police seized the following:

  • Glock 19 Gen4 9 mm handgun (loaded)
  • 31-round loaded overcapacity magazine
  • 492 grams of fentanyl
  • 93 grams of cocaine
  • 200 hydromorphone pills
  • Digital scales and packing
  • Cellular devices

Esrom Kibreab, 19, of North York, has been held for a bail hearing and is charged with the following:

  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking (fentanyl)
  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking (cocaine)
  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking (hydromorphone)
  • Possession of a prohibited device and unauthorized possession of a weapon (two counts)
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Unauthorized possession of a restricted firearm
  • Possession of a loaded restricted firearm
  • Being an occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm within
  • Possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle

Darryl Maximuk, 56, of Orillia, was held for a bail hearing and is charged with the same offences except for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

James Mountney, 62, of no fixed address, was held for a bail hearing and is charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking (cocaine).
