A seven-year member of the Peterborough Police Service is facing criminal charges.

Ontario Provincial Police say back in March, Peterborough’s police chief asked them to investigate allegations involving the member.

On Saturday, 27-year-old Mackenzie Rogers of Peterborough was charged with:

  • Breach of trust (two counts)
  • Possession of property obtained by crime - over $5,000

Peterborough Police Chief Stu Betts called the news difficult and disappointing.

“I also recognize that this is an extremely difficult day for everyone in our organization, and for the community to learn that someone in a position of trust has been arrested and charged criminally,” he said in a news release.

He says the officer has been suspended with pay in accordance with the provisions of the Community Safety and Policing Act, however that status could be re-evaluated as this moves through the court process

“I am fully cognizant that this officer has not been convicted of the alleged crimes and I am committed to ensuring the wellbeing of all of our members and will have programs in place to assist as needed,” Betts added.

Rogers has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 8.
