Police sirens and what sounded like gunshots woke residents of Grace Avenue early Sunday morning.
According to residents' reports on social media, several Orillia OPP cars were deployed to the area after 2 a.m. Nearby residents were told to stay in their homes.
By about 3 a.m., the incident had ended, but what happened during the intervening moments is still unclear.
There are reports on social media that a suspect's dog was shot and killed by police. However, there has been no official word from Orillia OPP.
That's because the province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in to investigate what happened on the road that runs between Laclie Street and Orma Drive. There are several homes and apartments on the avenue along with Trillium Manor, a long-term care home.
While details are scant, Monica Hudon, an SIU spokesperson, confirmed to OrilliaMatters that an investigation has begun.
"The preliminary information indicates that officers attended the area after receiving a call about a suspicious vehicle," Hudon explained. "In the course of apprehending occupants of the vehicle, a woman sustained a serious injury."
No other details have been released, but Hudon said she expects more information to be released Monday.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians.
