The Orillia OPP released details today about their involvement in a multi-jurisdictional investigation from March.
The Orillia detachment's community street crime unit, with assistance from the Muskoka OPP's community street crime unit, the Orillia crime unit, the OPP technical operations unit, the OPP physical surveillance unit, OPP helicopter and OPP Central Region's tactical response unit (TRU), "conducted a traffic stop" in Oshawa on March 13, notes a media release.
A male suspect fled the scene.
"The Central Region TRU team engaged and in the pursuit with the male a backpack was discarded," noted a media release from the Orillia OPP.
The male was subsequently taken into custody.
Orillia OPP Const. Derek Tilley said the male had been under surveillance by London and York police, in addition to the OPP.
He said the incident was investigated by the province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU), but he could not provide any details about the nature of that probe. Because of the SIU investigation, no details were released about the incident at the time.
"Now that the SIU has investigated and cleared the case, we can release the details," Tilley told OrilliaMatters.
The investigation determined the suspect was driving a stolen 2018 Dodge Ram. Also seized during the investigation was a Glock 17 9 mm handgun, two over-capacity 9 mm clips with ammunition, $2,610 in currency and quantities of methamphetamine, cocaine, fentanyl and oxycodone pills.
