Owen Sound Police Service (OSPS) and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have released new details about the arrests made in the summer in connection to the violent killing of an Owen Sound man.
Sharifur Rahman died in hospital on Aug. 24, 2023, a week after being beaten by a group of three men on Aug. 17 outside of Rahman's restaurant, The Curry House, located on 2nd Avenue East. Rahman was 44 years old at the time.
Soon after Rahman's death, police released a description and photos of three suspects and a vehicle, requesting public assistance in identifying the men.
Police announced arrests were made in connection with the case on July 30, 2024, but didn't release further details at the time.
Today, police confirmed the names of three men from the United Kingdom (U.K.), all of whom share a last name, and a list of charges from manslaughter to accessory after the fact.
According to the latest news release, police discovered that the suspects linked to the assault had left the country, necessitating co-ordination with international police for overseas arrests.
Robert Evans, 24, of the U.K. was arrested and charged with manslaughter.
Robert Busby Evans, 47 and Barry Evans, 54, were both arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to commit an indictable offence.
"The individuals are currently in the U.K. and are before the courts in relation to extradition. There are no timelines available for the extradition of the accused individuals," states the police news release.
"We are pleased to provide some long-awaited insight into the investigation and the court process in order for our community to continue to heal. The quality and dedication of the members of the investigative team that was assembled left no doubt that arrests and charges would result," said OSPS Chief Craig Ambrose in a news release.
The investigation is continuing by the OSPS under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with the assistance of the OPP West Region Crime Units, OPP Forensic Identification Services and the OPP Regional Support Team, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service. Assistance was also provided by police services in West Grey and Hanover, the RCMP, INTERPOL Ottawa Fugitive Apprehension Support Team (FAST) and U.K. law enforcement members from the National Extradition Unit of the National Crime Agency and Police Scotland.
"The OSPS and the OPP would once again like to extend their gratitude to the Owen Sound community and neighbouring jurisdictions for their support and valuable tips. We acknowledge the significant impact this case has had on the community and sincerely appreciate everyone's patience as we continue our thorough and comprehensive investigation," states the joint news release from OPP and OSPS.
