Police are investigating after two pickups were stolen from two residences on Wednesday and Thursday in southwest Barrie.

Two Dodge Ram pickup trucks were stolen from the driveways while the owners were asleep, according to police.

Police said the first theft involved a white 2023 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck with Ontario licence plate number BP61557.

From the investigation that followed, police said the truck was stolen from the Kodiak Terrace home at 1:20 a.m.

Although video surveillance was available, it appears to have been disabled, and the theft was not recorded, police said.

Police said the second theft occurred Thursday on Penvill Trail, at about 2:30 a.m., and involved a white 2024 Dodge Ram 1500, licence number BZ59352.

This theft occurred after an unknown man, dressed in dark clothing, approached the front door and held up an unknown wired device. A few moments later, the pickup lights flashed, the engine turned over and the truck was driven away, police said.

Video of the theft can be viewed on the police website.

Police said canvassing of both neighbourhoods has been conducted, and no additional video surveillance has been located that could assist in identifying who is responsible for the thefts.

The Barrie Police Service said it is reminding pickup truck owners to “utilize a Faraday pouch for your keys, consider the installation of an ignition defeat or tracking system, never leave your keys near the front door, and if possible, consider using (a) steering wheel locking device, an onboard diagnostic port lock or accelerator locking device.”

If available, other cars should be parked around any pickup truck that cannot be parked in a garage, as pinning your truck in may save it from being stolen, police added.

If residents of Barrie would like to keep their key fobs safe, they visit police headquarters on Fairview Road with valid identification, and they will receive a free Faraday pouch.
