Postcard Memories is a weekly series of historic postcard views and photos submitted by Marcel Rousseau.
Some were previously published by the Orillia Museum of Art and History and in the book Postcard Memories Orillia.
This early postcard view of Couchiching Park dates from around 1959. The ladies’ bathhouse burned down in 1958 and the men’s bathhouse, shown here on the right side of the photo, was divided for men and women the following year.
In 1960, Ray Knight Construction built a new bathhouse closer to the filtration plant that is still in use today.
The shoreline had been filled with limestone to prevent erosion and a pathway can be seen in front of the pavilion indicating this trail was well used long before today’s boardwalk was installed.
A handy feature for swimmers and canoes are the steps down to the water near the left base of the park dock.
To the right of the park dock is a small beach area with a shallow wooden dock to handle the overflow of swimmers on a hot summer day.
