After Susan Lewis shared her concerns about new parking spaces along busy Colborne Street downtown, sparking outcry from residents, the city has paused plans to install the new on-street parking spots to carry out a safety review.

The following is a letter to the editor and an open letter to Orillia city council regarding parking spots on Colborne Street.

Good move to pause installation of the new parking spots on Colborne Street.

I was extremely surprised to see these new spots and wondered why the additional parking is necessary — I hope not to simply generate a few thousand dollars of revenue.

In addition to the safety concerns already expressed, please keep the safety of cyclists in mind, too. With parking spaces added to this section of roadway, there is really no safe way for a cyclist to be in traffic. And when in danger, sometimes the sidewalk is the only option — and not a good one.

I realize that there is a cycling lane on Mississaga Street, but with the location of city hall and Lakehead University, there will always be cyclists in the area and at the intersection of West and Colborne streets.
