LETTER: This big fight has little meaning outside of Toronto

2018-03-01 Doug Ford CP
Ontario premier Doug Ford is at the centre of controversy over a decision to use the notwithstanding clause to reduce the size of Toronto's municipal government.

OrilliaMatters received the following letter from Konrad Brenner in response to recent stories about Doug Ford's decision to invoke the notwithstanding clause to reduce the size of Toronto's city council.

The Ontario Premier called for a sitting of the Ontario Legislature at 12:01 a.m. on Sept 17 to deal with a provincially inconsequential matter; said siting will cost the general taxpayer a considerable amount.

The question is how large the Toronto Council should be and should a change be implemented now or in four years. The issue is of great interest to candidates in this year's Toronto election and of some interest to Toronto taxpayers but of little importance to the rest of the Ontario citizens.

Both the Conservative Party and the NDP are wasting money. The former by not waiting for the next election to implement their reform and the latter using this as an opportunity for publicity. The Charter of Rights issue would take care of itself with more time. In a greater scheme, this big fight has little meaning.
