The following letter is in response a story titled 'What's the cost of speeding up liquor, beer sales at corner stores?' published May 28.

In March 2018, before becoming premier, Doug Ford said there’s “billions of dollars being wasted” by the then-Liberal government, and when he gets in office, the “party is over with the taxpayers’ money.”

In May 2024, Premier Doug Ford announced he wants to get beer and wine into convenience stores ahead of schedule. This will cost Ontario taxpayers at least $225 million.

Premier Ford is wasting our money and the gravy train has pulled into Queen’s Park.

Ontario taxpayers deserve better from their government. Many of us are able to get alcohol at the local Beer Store, LCBO and grocery stores.

Why is the premier in such a rush to get beer into Circle K stores when over two million people in the province do not have a doctor? Schools are in need of repair and there is a teacher shortage in Ontario schools.

This $225 million could be better spent hiring more doctors, nurses and teachers, or maybe the government could reopen the Minden emergency room in cottage country for the summer.

There is talk that the premier wants a costly early election. Progressive Conservative MPPs are calling Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie names like “the carbon tax queen” at every barbecue and press conference. They must be really afraid of the former Mississauga mayor. Premier Ford looks desperate with TV ads on Hockey Night in Canada in which he is returning phone calls to paid actors.

It is time for the people of Ontario to let the billion-dollar man know that it is not OK to waste our money. Please contact the premier at 416-325-1941 or correspondence.premier.gov.on.ca/EN/feedback/default.aspx and tell Mr. Ford to stop the gravy train.
