Police are thanking bystanders who came to the aid of an officer who was being assaulted Thursday while trying to detain someone in Orillia.

Shortly after 11:30 a.m., officers were called to a mischief report at a local restaurant. One officer located the suspect walking near Front and Queen streets and attempted to detain the suspect.

“During this, an altercation occurred, and the suspect began assaulting the officer, including attempting to spit in their face,” Orillia OPP said in a news release. “The officer noted that at this time, two civilians came to their aid, assisting with restraining the party until more officers arrived on scene.”

The officer did not report having any injuries.

Toriq Tyme, 26, of no fixed address, has been charged with causing a disturbance, resisting a peace officer, assaulting a peace officer, mischief (two counts) and failure to comply with a probation order (six counts).

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
