UPDATE: One person seriously injured in fiery Hwy. 12 crash

Collision happened on Highway 12 bypass near Memorial Avenue; officials say the bypass remains closed as the investigation continues

Emergency crews were called to a fiery crash on the Highway 12 bypass near Memorial Avenue in Orillia on Saturday afternoon.

One person was air-lifted to a Toronto area hospital with serious injuries, while a second person was transported by ambulance to Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, the Orillia OPP said in a media release.

Orilllia OPP officers along with Simcoe County paramedics, and firefighters from Orillia and Ramara were joined by an Air ORNG helicopter at the scene just after 1 p.m. Saturday.

Police were alerted to a vehicle "swerving in and out of traffic." That was followed by reports of a multi-vehicle collision where one vehicle caught fire.

"The OPP Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) Team are at the scene and are assisting with the investigation," notes the media release.

Highway 12 South between Memorial Avenue and West Street South is currently closed due to the incident. Motorists are asked to avoid the area while officers investigate.
