A driver has temporarily lost their car and licence after York Regional Police clocked the vehicle's speed at 102 km/h in a 50 km/h school zone while children were on their way to school today.
The driver was caught by an officer using radar near a school at about 8:15 a.m. Sept. 16, police said.
Their licence was suspended for 30 days, while their vehicle, a black Honda Civic, was towed and impounded for 14 days.
'Shocking that it occurred in a school zone while kids were walking to school,' police said on X in response to a comment about the high speed.
Drivers who are involved in stunt driving or street racing are subject to an immediate 30-day driver's licence suspension, an immediate 14-day vehicle impoundment at roadside (whether it is your vehicle or not), and a minimum fine of $2,000 and a maximum fine of $10,000, police added.
The post on social media prompted some residents to ask for increased enforcement in school zones in their communities, with police responding that requests can be made on the community concern form.
