Early morning barn fire claims 40 cows; 70 rescued by firefighters

Forty cows perished after a fire broke out in a cattle barn near Alma Sunday morning.

A news release issued by Mapleton Fire Rescue (MFR) says a call for service was issued just before 9 a.m.

"On arrival, the barn was fully involved," the release says. "The barn housed approximately 110 cows; 40 cows perished in the fire and 70 cows were rescued from the building."

Although the cause of the fire has yet to be determined, MFR says it's believed to have originated in the second storey of the barn.

No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported in this incident.
