Head-on collision has shut down stretch of Atherley Road: OPP

Few details have been released but police are asking people to avoid the area as the road is expected to be closed for several hours

A head-on crash, that may have included up to five cars, has shut down Atherley Road.

It appears a vehicle driving towards Rama crossed the centre line, just past the Barnfield Point Recreation Centre, and slammed into an oncoming vehicle at around 5:30 p.m. Monday evening. Other vehicles were also involved.

At least one person had to be extracted by firefighters, who were joined on the scene by paramedics and Orillia OPP officers.

Witnesses say an ORNJ helicopter was required to take at least one patient to hospital. However, few other details are certain and the Orillia OPP has yet to provide an update.

Police are asking people to avoid the area; both sides of Atherley Road are closed and the road is expected to be closed for some time while the investigation unfolds.
