A porch fire spread into a James Street house early Sunday morning. One person escaped from the blaze, firefighters say.

A fire started on a back porch and spread into a home early this morning.

The call came in about 3:57 a.m.

Orillia Fire Chief Michael Clark said the fire started from a lit cigarette butt in a planter on the rear deck.

"Unfortunately, we have had a number of similar fires recently," said Clark.

"People should be made aware that the soil in pots is a potential combustible material for lit cigarettes," he noted.

Clark said the fire spread along the outside of the house and into the attic.

The firefighters contained the fire damage to these areas with a quick knock down but there is extensive water damage through the house.

"We estimate the damage to be about $200,000," said Clark.

There were no injuries and the four occupants of the house were able to escape safely.
