The province's police watchdog has invoked its mandate following the end of a manhunt during which an OPP officer was shot.

This afternoon (June 12), OPP apprehended 43-year-old Lucas MacDonald, whom police had been looking for since May 23. Police believe he has information on the Matheson-area murder of 30-year-old Marcel Thoma.

During an interaction on a Nighthawk Lake island, an OPP officer was shot and MacDonald was taken into custody. The officer is in an area hospital in stable condition, say police.

Nighthawk Lake is located in the east end of Timmins off of Highway 101 on the way to Connaught.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate in connection with the investigation.

The SIU is an arms-length agency that investigates police-involved incidents where there has been a death, serious injury, allegations of sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

Because the SIU is now involved, OPP won't be releasing any further details.

The SIU, on X (formerly Twitter) said tonight it is investigating "after multiple OPP officers discharged their firearms at a male in the area of Night Hawk Lake earlier today. The male was not seriously injured."

However, after the suspect was arrested, police said there are no further risks to public safety.

Anyone with information about the investigation should call OPP at 1-888-310-1122. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
