Police pull heavy trucks off area roads due to 'major defects'

Charges have been laid after a pair of heavy trucks were found to have "major defects" during a commercial vehicle safety blitz by Barrie police.

A heavy truck's trailer was taken off the roads Thursday after traffic unit officers, who are licensed inspectors, found it had a "cracked frame" while travelling north on Bayfield Street.

The driver was charged with driving a motor vehicle with a major defect in it or drawn vehicle, and failure to accurately complete a daily inspection report.

And this morning, another vehicle was also stopped on Bayfield Street while it was also heading out of Barrie. 

Both of the trucks were operated by companies out of the Toronto area, police say. 

"They were all heading to the Edenvale area," said Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon. 

Police have been doing commercial vehicle blitz most of the week throughout the city. 

"This isn't the first time we have had to remove vehicles from our roads," said Leon, adding heavy haulers with structural defects pose a "great risk" to the community and other drivers on the road. 

"This is a necessary level of enforcement," he said.
