South Simcoe police are investigating an infant death following an incident at an Innisfil home in the Big Bay Point area last week.

In the early morning hours of Friday, Nov. 8, police say officers responded to a medical service call at a residence on Algonquin Avenue.

The South Simcoe Police Service's Criminal Investigation Bureau is now investigating the incident as an infant death, according to a news release issued Tuesday.

"The scene has since been released and there is no risk to public safety," police stated. "The investigation is ongoing and is expected to be a lengthy process."

Police say more details will be provided as the investigation warrants.

"As police continue their investigation, we ask for understanding from the public and media," stated the release. "Given the highly sensitive nature of the matter, we request that the focus remain on respecting the privacy of everyone involved."
