A fatal crash that brought Highway 400 to a complete standstill for nearly 10 hours overnight was caused by road rage, OPP say.
The department has confirmed the six-vehicle crash, which happened Friday evening between county roads 88 and 89 in Cookstown, led to the death of a 21-year-old Mississauga man.
Aurora OPP responded to the call around 5:30 p.m., Const. Pawel Sikora said in a Saturday morning post on X, the social-media platform formerly known as Twitter.
“Initial reports suggest that two vehicles were road raging, which results in a collision between the two vehicles,” he said, noting the vehicles were travelling south at the time.
The initial crash caused one of the vehicles to cross the centre median of the highway, leading to a collision with a pickup truck heading north. The vehicle that crossed the median and then rolled, killing the driver.
Police say the driver of the truck was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Initial reports suggest there were no injuries to the other drivers involved, Sikora said.
“We are reaching out to see if there are any potential witnesses with dash-cam footage that could be provided,” he said.
The highway fully reopened around 4 a.m.

Updated on April 27, 2024 at 9:16 a.m.: A serious crash closed all lanes of Highway 400 near Cookstown Friday night and into early Saturday morning.
Emergency crews responded to the multi-vehicle incident, which occurred between county roads 88 and 89, in the early evening of April 26. All northbound and southbound lanes along that stretch reopened Saturday morning.
“NB and SB have fully reopened,” OPP said on X, the social-media platform formerly known as Twitter.
