A tractor-trailer collided with a school bus carrying children on Highway 12 at about 8:42 a.m. Thursday, prompting a significant response from emergency services.
According to Orillia OPP Const. Derek Tilley, the school bus appeared to be stopped when it was rear-ended by the tractor-trailer on the east side of Highway 12 between Wainman Line and Prices Corner.
"Right now, as of 11:05, there are still no charges," Tilley said. "That's undetermined at this point."
He says an investigation has been launched as the crash involves two commercial vehicles.
"The ministry and our traffic team will be involved," he said.
Tilley says only minor injuries were reported, and Simcoe County paramedics were on site to assess the passengers.
"A few people were transported to a local area hospital for precautionary measures," he said.
Following the collision, students on the bus were transferred to a secondary bus to ensure their safety and comfort, reports At the Scene Photography.
One lane of the highway was closed for debris cleanup. Police are urging motorists to avoid the area and find alternative routes while crews work to clear the road.
"The ministry right now is trying to handle the road closure with the fact that it’s extremely backed up and cars are turning around creating even more issues," Tilley said.
He urges all motorists to be aware of buses on the roads during school hours.
"Show extra caution and be aware when school buses are stopped for children loading," he said.
