Orillia OPP is reporting what it calls a “staggering” increase in impaired-related charges that were laid in 2024.
About 420 charges were laid that year, an increase of approximately 25 per cent from 2022, when 304 charges were laid, and a spike of about 14 per cent (340 charges) from 2023.
For the detachment that covers Orillia, Oro-Medonte, Ramara and Severn, that means an impaired-related charge was laid, on average, every 21 hours — “a concerning amount,” police said in a news release.
All drivers charged with impaired have their licences suspended for 90 days and their vehicles impounded for seven days.
“The Orillia OPP urges everyone to plan ahead and arrange for a safe ride home. Call a friend or call a cab. Remember that any amount of alcohol or drugs can impact your ability to make sound judgments,” the release stated.
Police urge people to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 911 or 1-888-310-1122.
